Emergency Repairs for Manchester Homeowners

Manchester homeowners call RJC Plumbing for emergency repairs because we are close by, based in Augusta, and out on Central Maine roads every day — the housing stock and the local permit process are not a mystery to us.

When a plumbing emergency strikes, RJC Plumbing responds fast. We tackle clogs, leaks, burst pipes, and drain backups with urgency and expertise to minimize damage and restore your plumbing quickly.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

A burst or frozen pipe, water running where it should not, a sewer backup, no water at all, or a water heater leaking onto the floor. If it is doing damage or you cannot shut it off, call us.

We prioritise active leaks and no-water calls. Same-day service is often available, and our customers regularly tell us we arrived within hours of the call.

While you wait: shut the main water valve (usually where the line enters the basement), turn off the water heater if it is leaking, and keep a bucket under active drips.

Frozen and burst pipes in Central Maine

Every January brings frozen lines in crawlspaces, exterior walls and unheated garages across Augusta, Hallowell and the lake towns. A frozen pipe that has not split can often be thawed and protected.

A burst pipe is cut out and replaced, and we look for the reason it froze — a draft, a missing insulation batt, a line run through an exterior wall — so it does not happen again.

Leak detection and repair

Some leaks are obvious. Others show up as a stain on a ceiling, a warm spot on a floor, or a water bill that jumped. We trace the leak to its source before opening anything.

Repairs are made with the right material for the line — copper, PEX or PVC — and pressure-tested. Where an old section keeps failing, we will tell you honestly whether a longer replacement makes more sense.

Drain backups and sump pumps

A backup in the lowest drain of the house usually means a main-line clog. We clear it and check for the cause. Sump pumps that failed during spring melt are replaced with a properly sized unit and, if wanted, a battery backup.

You will get a clear explanation of what failed and a price before we start the repair. If a fix is temporary we will say so and give you the options.

Why Manchester Chooses RJC Plumbing

  • Manchester is squarely inside our regular route, not a special trip
  • No hidden fees — the price you approve is the price on the invoice
  • We keep room in the schedule for the calls that are genuinely urgent
  • A fully licensed and insured Master Plumber, with a real person answering the phone

Manchester's Homes and Plumbing

Manchester’s Code Enforcement Office also serves as the building and plumbing inspector, so internal plumbing and septic permits start there. Septic systems in Maine are permitted by the town’s Licensed Plumbing Inspector on form HHE-200 under the state Subsurface Wastewater Disposal Rules.

Manchester borders Augusta, Hallowell, Farmingdale and Winthrop, and we serve all of them. See every town on our Central Maine service areas page.

Family-Owned, Not a Franchise

There is no franchise behind RJC Plumbing — just a family-owned crew based in Augusta that has worked Manchester since 2022. Being small means fewer layers between you and the person actually doing the work. A satisfied customer who calls again is worth more to us than a bigger invoice today.

Codes & Permits for Emergency Repairs in Manchester

In Manchester, plumbing permits come from the Local Plumbing Inspector at the Manchester Code Enforcement Office (Manchester Town Office, 12 Readfield Road (physical) / P.O. Box 18 (mailing), Manchester, ME 04351, (207) 622-1894). With 2,456 residents, Manchester is under the 4,000-resident line at which Maine requires a town to enforce MUBEC. A separate Manchester Sanitary District (PO Box 226, Manchester, ME 04351; governed by its own elected trustees, meeting monthly) regulates public sewer connections, distinct from the town office's own departments.

  • The EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions required every U.S. community water system to complete an initial inventory of lead, galvanized-requiring-replacement, and unknown-material service lines by October 16, 2024; the follow-on Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, finalized October 8, 2024, requires full replacement of remaining lead lines within 10 years. epa.gov
  • The Maine Plumbers' Examining Board (within the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Department of Professional and Financial Regulation) licenses plumbers statewide and maintains the plumbing rules and laws (Title 32, Chapter 49); day-to-day permit issuance and inspection for a given town is carried out locally by a Local Plumbing Inspector (LPI), who is often the same person as the municipality's Code Enforcement Officer. maine.gov

How RJC Plumbing Handles Emergency Repairs in Manchester

  • With a median year built of 1977 and 16% of Manchester homes older than 1940, we still open up plenty of galvanized supply lines and early copper on an emergency repair call, and price the job around what we actually find.
  • Not every Manchester home is on a public water line, so part of an emergency repair visit is confirming the water source first — well or district — since that changes what we watch for.
  • Anything that needs one gets a permit through the Manchester Code Enforcement Office, built to the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code Maine adopted in 2022.

Emergency Repairs Questions from Manchester Homeowners

Do you offer same-day emergency plumbing in Augusta?

Same-day service is often available for active leaks, burst pipes and no-water situations. Call (207) 549-0064 and tell us what is happening — those calls go to the front of the line.

What should I do while I wait for the plumber?

Shut off the main water valve where the line enters the house, switch off the power or gas to a leaking water heater, and move belongings away from the water. Do not run any water if a drain is backing up.

My pipes are frozen but not burst — can you help?

Yes. We thaw frozen lines safely, check them for splits under pressure, and insulate or reroute the section so it does not freeze again.

Do you repair sump pumps and add battery backups?

Yes. We replace failed sump pumps with a properly sized unit and can add a battery backup so the basement stays dry during a power outage.

Do you charge extra for emergency calls?

You will be given the price before any work starts. Ask when you call and we will tell you exactly what to expect for your situation.

Which towns do you respond to for emergencies?

Augusta, Hallowell, Gardiner, Farmingdale, Manchester, Winthrop, Waterville and the surrounding Kennebec County towns.
