How a Fixture Rough-In Works
- Cold supply stub-out — capped until the fixture is trimmed out
- Hot supply stub-out — capped until the fixture is trimmed out
- Shutoff valves — set now, so trim-out is a quick visit
- Drain arm — sloped to the branch line, sized to the fixture
- Vent — ties into the stack so the trap can not siphon dry
From sink installations and dishwasher hookups to garbage disposal replacements and faucet upgrades, RJC Plumbing handles all your kitchen plumbing needs with expert craftsmanship and attention to detail.
What kitchen plumbing work do we handle in Augusta?
Most kitchen calls are about the sink: a dripping faucet, a slow drain, a disposal that hums but will not spin, or a dishwasher that was never connected properly. We repair or replace all of it, usually in one visit.
We also handle the plumbing side of kitchen remodels — moving supply and drain lines for a new island, adding a pot filler, or roughing in a second sink — and coordinate with your cabinet installer so nothing waits on us.
Fixture upgrades are common in the older homes around Augusta, Hallowell and Gardiner. Swapping worn shut-off valves and supply lines while a new faucet goes in prevents the leaks that show up later under the cabinet.
Why is my kitchen sink draining slowly?
Grease, coffee grounds and food scraps build up in the trap and the horizontal drain line behind the wall. A disposal that is not flushed with cold water makes it worse. We clear the whole line, not just the trap.
If the drain gurgles or backs up when the dishwasher runs, the cause is usually a blocked air gap, a kinked drain hose or a partly clogged branch line. All three are quick fixes once diagnosed.
Should I repair or replace a leaking kitchen faucet?
A cartridge or seal on a quality faucet is worth replacing. A builder-grade faucet that is more than ten years old, corroded at the base or leaking from the spout usually costs about as much to rebuild as to replace.
We carry common cartridges and supply lines on the truck, so many faucet repairs are finished on the first trip. For replacements, we are happy to install a fixture you have already purchased.
Garbage disposal and dishwasher hookups
Disposal installs include a new mounting assembly, a properly pitched discharge, and a dishwasher connection with the knockout removed — a step that is often missed and leaves the dishwasher unable to drain.
For dishwashers we install the supply valve, route the drain with a high loop or air gap, and confirm the electrical connection is in place before we leave, so the first cycle runs without a puddle.

Kitchen Plumbing: Fixture Swaps, Rough-Ins & the Problems Behind Them
A kitchen sees more plumbing traffic than almost any other room in the house — hot and cold water, a disposal, a dishwasher, sometimes an ice maker or a pot filler, all tied into one small cluster of pipes under the sink. Most of what goes wrong there traces back to a handful of well-understood causes, and most of it is a same-visit fix once we know which one it is.
Fixture Swaps: What's Actually Involved
Swapping a kitchen faucet or sink sounds simple until the shutoff valves underneath turn out to be original to the house. Valves that have not been turned in years often will not seal fully once they're closed, which is why we replace worn supply valves and lines as part of a fixture swap rather than reusing whatever is already there — it is the difference between a clean install and a callback for a slow drip six months later.
A like-for-like faucet or sink swap is usually a single visit. Moving the sink location, adding a second bowl, or upgrading to a pot filler or instant-hot dispenser means opening the wall or cabinet back to the supply and drain lines, which we treat as a small rough-in rather than a simple swap.

Rough-Ins for Remodels and New Islands
A kitchen remodel or a new island sink means running new supply and drain lines to a location that never had them, then coordinating the timing so the rough-in happens before cabinets and countertops go in and the trim-out happens after. We work directly with your cabinet installer or general contractor so the plumbing is never the thing holding up the schedule.
The drain side is usually the harder half of an island sink: it needs its own vent, which on a single-story home often means a loop vent under the sink cabinet rather than a straight vertical vent through the roof. We size and route that during the rough-in, before the countertop makes it inaccessible.
Why Kitchen Sinks Drain Slowly (or Stop Entirely)
- Grease and cooking oil coat the inside of the drain line and narrow it over time, even when it goes down as a liquid — it solidifies once it cools past the trap.
- Coffee grounds, rice, and pasta swell or compact inside the trap rather than washing through it.
- A garbage disposal that isn't run with a steady stream of cold water pushes food waste further down the line instead of grinding it fine enough to clear it.
- A gurgling drain when the dishwasher runs usually means a partly blocked branch line or a disposal knockout plug that was never removed, not a dishwasher problem.

Garbage Disposal and Dishwasher Hookups
A disposal install includes a new mounting assembly, a discharge pitched correctly to the trap, and — if a dishwasher ties into the same disposal — removal of the knockout plug inside the disposal's dishwasher inlet. That plug is punched out at the factory but left in place until a dishwasher is actually connected; skip it and the dishwasher backs up into itself on every cycle.
For the dishwasher itself, the drain line needs either a high loop secured up near the countertop or an air gap mounted at the sink, so wastewater from the sink drain can never siphon back into the dishwasher. We confirm the electrical connection is live and test a full cycle before we call the job done.

Kitchen Plumbing questions from Augusta homeowners
Do you install faucets and sinks that I bought myself?
Yes. Have the fixture on site and we will install it, including new supply lines and shut-off valves if yours are worn. We will tell you up front if a fixture is not a good fit for your sink.
Can you replace my garbage disposal the same day?
Often, yes. Standard 1/2 and 3/4 HP disposals are common stock, and a like-for-like replacement typically takes about an hour. Call in the morning and we will do our best to fit it in.
Why does my dishwasher leave standing water?
Usually a drain hose without a high loop, a clogged air gap, or a disposal knockout plug that was never removed at install. We check all three, then the pump and filter, and fix it in one visit.
Do you handle the plumbing for a full kitchen remodel?
Yes. We rough in new supply and drain locations, relocate lines for islands and second sinks, and return for trim-out once cabinets and counters are set. We coordinate directly with your contractor or cabinet installer.
Which towns do you cover for kitchen plumbing?
Augusta, Hallowell, Gardiner, Farmingdale, Manchester, Winthrop and Waterville, plus the surrounding Kennebec County towns. If you are unsure, call and we will tell you right away.
Is there a charge for a kitchen plumbing estimate?
No. Estimates are free and there is no obligation. For small repairs we can usually quote over the phone and confirm the price on arrival before starting.
