Your local plumber in Farmingdale, Maine
Farmingdale lies between Hallowell and Gardiner, with the Kennebec River along its eastern edge and US 201 and Route 27 running through the village. About two thirds of its 3,000 residents live on that east side. West of I-95 the town turns rural, and so does the plumbing.
Two kinds of homes in one small town
In the village near the river, homes connect to public water and sewer. Parts of Farmingdale are served by the Hallowell Water District and the Gardiner Water District, and wastewater is pumped to Gardiner’s treatment plant in South Gardiner. Farther from the village, homes are more likely to rely on their own well and septic system.
On a private well, “no water” usually means the pump, the pressure tank or the pressure switch. Our well pump repair service diagnoses which one failed and fixes it. Maine CDC recommends testing private wells for bacteria and nitrates every year and for arsenic, uranium, radon, lead and hardness every three to five years, since about one in ten Maine wells has a harmful level of something.
A housing mix from the 1800s to the 1970s
Farmingdale’s median home dates to 1973, but nearly a quarter were built before 1940, and the town also has mobile homes and seasonal places. That range means we see everything from corroded galvanized lines in old farmhouses to failing fittings in 1970s ranches. Our pipe repair work handles leaks, frozen and burst lines and full repiping where a house needs it.
Around 60% of homes heat with oil. When a water heater tied into that system, or a standalone tank beside it, starts leaking, our water heater installation service covers tank, tankless and hybrid heat-pump replacements.
Census counts also show about 139 mobile and manufactured homes in Farmingdale. In those homes the supply and drain lines usually run under the floor, behind the skirting, so a damaged or missing skirting panel in January is a common cause of frozen lines. Keeping that space closed, and fixing a split line quickly when it happens, is the best way to avoid freeze damage.
River edge, permits and neighbors
With the Kennebec on its eastern boundary, low-lying Farmingdale properties see high groundwater in spring and after big storms. A properly sized sump pump with a battery backup is cheap insurance for a finished basement. In Farmingdale the Code Enforcement Officer also serves as plumbing inspector, by appointment, for internal plumbing and septic permits.
Farmingdale borders Hallowell, Gardiner and Manchester, all of which we serve. See the full list on our service areas page.

Codes & Permits for Plumbing in Farmingdale
In Farmingdale, plumbing permits come from the Local Plumbing Inspector at the Farmingdale Town Office (289 Maine Avenue, Farmingdale, ME 04344, (207) 582-2225). With 3,017 residents, Farmingdale is under the 4,000-resident line at which Maine requires a town to enforce MUBEC. Farmingdale's stretch of the Kennebec River hosted major 19th-century ice-harvesting operations, including the Knickerbocker Ice Company — once the largest ice company in the country — before it burned in the mid-1890s.
- The EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions required every U.S. community water system to complete an initial inventory of lead, galvanized-requiring-replacement, and unknown-material service lines by October 16, 2024; the follow-on Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, finalized October 8, 2024, requires full replacement of remaining lead lines within 10 years. epa.gov
- The Maine Plumbers' Examining Board (within the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Department of Professional and Financial Regulation) licenses plumbers statewide and maintains the plumbing rules and laws (Title 32, Chapter 49); day-to-day permit issuance and inspection for a given town is carried out locally by a Local Plumbing Inspector (LPI), who is often the same person as the municipality's Code Enforcement Officer. maine.gov
How RJC Plumbing Handles Plumbing in Farmingdale
- With a median year built of 1973 and 24% of Farmingdale homes older than 1940, we still open up plenty of galvanized supply lines and early copper on a plumbing call, and price the job around what we actually find.
- Not every Farmingdale home is on a public water line, so part of a plumbing visit is confirming the water source first — well or district — since that changes what we watch for.
- Work that needs a permit gets one from the Farmingdale Town Office before we start, under Maine's 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code.
