Plumbing in Brunswick, Maine
Family-owned, licensed and insured plumbing for Brunswick homes, from our base in Augusta.
Your local plumber in Brunswick, Maine
Brunswick is about 33 miles down I-295 from our Augusta base, at the head of tide on the Androscoggin River where it meets the top of Casco Bay. It is a town of about 21,800 people, and its plumbing is as mixed as its housing: older homes around downtown and Bowdoin College, subdivisions from the 1970s and 1980s, the former Navy base now known as Brunswick Landing, and coastal roads out toward Mere Point and Maquoit Bay where a house may run on its own well.
Plumbing in Brunswick homes, old and new
Census figures put the median Brunswick home at 1982, younger than most of the towns we serve, but about one in five was built before 1940 and nearly a third before 1960. Those older houses near Maine Street and the college are where we find rusted galvanized supply pipe, cracked cast-iron drain stacks and pinhole leaks in early copper. When a run keeps failing, our pipe repair and repiping service replaces it with copper or PEX and pressure-tests the line before the wall is closed.
The newer half of town has its own weak spots. Homes plumbed in the late 1970s through the early 1990s sometimes still carry gray polybutylene supply pipe, which tends to fail at the fittings, and 40-year-old shut-off valves and fixtures that no longer seal. If a slow tub or kitchen sink is the problem, start with drain cleaning; if it is a leak, we will tell you plainly whether it is one bad fitting or a pipe near the end of its life.
Water and sewer in Brunswick
Most of Brunswick drinks water from the Brunswick & Topsham Water District, which draws groundwater from wells in a sand-and-gravel aquifer. Water from its Jackson and Taylor wells is filtered for iron and manganese, and the district has run Jackson Station in Topsham, its largest source, since 1971. Inside the house, the pipes, valves and fixtures are the part a plumber looks after.
Wastewater is handled by the Brunswick Sewer District, which treats it at its plant on Pine Tree Road before discharge to the Androscoggin River. Homes beyond the water mains, including many on the rural and coastal roads, rely on private wells, and when pressure drops or the pump starts short-cycling, our well pump and pressure tank repair work covers the pump, tank, pressure switch and controls. For wet basements, see sump pump installation.
Hot water, remodels and emergencies in Brunswick
About 45% of Brunswick homes heat with oil and about one in five with natural gas, with propane close behind, so a replacement water heater here can be an oil-fired indirect tank, a gas or propane unit, or a hybrid heat-pump model. Our water heater installation work covers tank, tankless and hybrid units, and we will talk through which one suits your fuel, space and hot-water use.
Plumbing permits in Brunswick are issued by the town’s Planning & Development office at 85 Union Street. For planned projects such as a bathroom remodel, a kitchen update or a new construction or renovation job, every job starts with a free estimate and an upfront price. For a burst pipe, a failed water heater or a backed-up drain, call (207) 549-0064 about emergency plumbing repairs. To compare nearby areas, see all of our service areas.

Codes & Permits for Plumbing in Brunswick
In Brunswick, plumbing permits come from the Local Plumbing Inspector at the Planning & Codes Office, Town of Brunswick Dept. of Planning and Development (85 Union Street, Brunswick, ME 04011, 207-725-6660). With 21,756 residents, Brunswick is required to enforce the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC). Brunswick applies a Shoreland Protection Overlay (including a Resource Protection subdistrict) and a Special Flood Hazard Area overlay near the Androscoggin/Casco Bay shoreline; the town's Local Plumbing Inspector can approve reduced setbacks for replacement subsurface wastewater systems with a state-licensed soils evaluator's report.
- The EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions required every U.S. community water system to complete an initial inventory of lead, galvanized-requiring-replacement, and unknown-material service lines by October 16, 2024; the follow-on Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, finalized October 8, 2024, requires full replacement of remaining lead lines within 10 years. epa.gov
- The Maine Plumbers' Examining Board (within the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Department of Professional and Financial Regulation) licenses plumbers statewide and maintains the plumbing rules and laws (Title 32, Chapter 49); day-to-day permit issuance and inspection for a given town is carried out locally by a Local Plumbing Inspector (LPI), who is often the same person as the municipality's Code Enforcement Officer. maine.gov
How RJC Plumbing Handles Plumbing in Brunswick
- 20% of Brunswick's homes predate 1940 (median year built 1982), so before we quote a plumbing job we find out what's actually behind the wall — galvanized steel, cast iron, early copper or PEX.
- Brunswick & Topsham Water District (BTWD) supplies most of Brunswick from sand-and-gravel aquifer wells; on a plumbing job we work fixture by fixture on your side of that meter.
- Work that needs a permit gets one from the Planning & Codes Office, Town of Brunswick Dept. of Planning and Development before we start, under Maine's 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code.
